Dawn Of a Designer
Chief designer at Vama Coutures talks inspirations, her upbringing and shiny things.
What is your designing inspiration?
What is your process when designing a line?
When creating each piece or a collection I start by deciding on the theme. I come from a background in jewellery, I love to combine old-world craftsmanship with contemporary styles and techniques. I put pen to paper and move onto playing dress ups using paper models to see how the pieces look.
Once I am happy with my designs I collaborate with my craftsmen in product development. This takes a tremendous amount of effort to ensure everything is just as I had imagined.
Through out this whole process I place high emphasis on making certain the best materials such as metals, gemstones and diamonds are being used. I am lucky because my father is a professional gemmologist so he gives the quality of products a final appraisal.
What made you get into jewellery?
My passion for jewellery came from my background at home, along with a strong love for design, fashion, art and aesthetics. Being of Indian descent and hailing from a family of jewellers, jewellery has always been an integral part of my heritage and upbringing.
I have always been fascinated by the process of making jewellery and the extreme love and care that is applied to each piece in the making and I was fortunate enough to personally see and experience the process of creating beautiful hand-crafted jewellery.
In my opinion the process of designing and making jewellery is one of endless fascination and evolution that I love.
What do you love about jewellery?
I believe that the right piece of jewellery can not only uplift a woman’s spirit but can also bring elegance and life to a simple outfit instantly.
My mother first introduced me to Indian jewellery, exposing me to the way it is worn and it's unique sense of volume. I have always loved how jewellery could accessorize clothing or just be a stand alone piece based on it’s own aesthetic qualities!
